Japanese Electric Vehicles: Aiding Relief Efforts
After the disaster that earthquake and tsunami brought to the land of green technology, it was quite a sight to see a Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Sendai helping out to distribute goods to nearby locations. Yes, the tragedy that unfolded on March 11 had certainly stunned the world with how it brought to pieces the sturdy structures of a highly advanced country. However, equally noteworthy is the fact that recovery efforts have been amazing, though not much publicity is being made about it.

Carmakers in Japan have been trumpeting about their electric vehicles for some time now, but no one expected it would be very helpful in the efforts to get the nation back to its feet. In the aftermath of the calamity, rolling blackouts were implemented in the Tokyo region to offset the electricity loss from the Fukushima plants. For companies like Mitsubishi and Nissan, which have been at the front line in the manufacturing of electric cars, this was one of those dreaded moments. Surprisingly, an unlikely twist of fate occurred, turning things into their favour.
With gasoline in short supply in the northeast of Japan and electricity back in most places, the cars have contributed much to the rescue efforts, not needing to go to a gas station to refuel. Because of their durability and utility in the urban landscape, many sceptical consumers are now convinced that these wheels are not just toys for environmentally minded people.
Nonetheless, it will probably take time before these technoligical marvels make it mainstream. In fact, despite their quiet interior, great handling, and impressive acceleration, the limited storage space and legroom may not necessary suit the needs of a big family. It is hoped though that with greater subsidies, these expensive small vehicles would be within the reach of ordinary consumers.
With a car loan that is tailored to one’s budget and payment preferences, any debris- strewn street in the world can soon do their own share in rebuilding local communities. Indeed, if there is something about the green transport revolution that we should be thankful about, it is the perfect timing.
